ANDREWS, SC (WBTW) – A former employee of the Town of Andrews was arrested by SLED agents for misconduct in office Wednesday.
A press release from SLED confirms Wadus Lamont Newton, 44, is charged with embezzlement of public funds less than $10,000 and misconduct in office. Newton was investigated by SLED agents at the request of the Town of Andrews.
The arrest warrant from SLED claims between January 1, 2017, and January 31, 2018, Newton, while working as an employee for the Town of Andrews, used a town-issued fuel card to put gas into his personal vehicles on numerous occasions. The warrant notes that by using the town’s gas card for his personal use, Newton embezzled more than $500 from the town.
Newton was booked at the Georgetown County Detention Center Wednesday. Bail has not been set, according to online records, as of the time of this posting.
