FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) – Power outages caused many residents to throw out spoiled food after Hurricane Matthew.
Lighthouse Ministries in Florence has a food donation service to help individuals and families enjoy a well-balanced meal during this time and any time they are in need.
The Ministry says there’s been an increase in food demand since the storm, but they pride themselves on serving the needs of people in the County
Juliette Wilson, a Lighthouse Ministries volunteer said, “There are so many people that are hurting now and the needs are real. And it is a great feeling when you can meet those individual needs and see the smiles on their faces when they come in and know that they have gotten food.”
Wilson says they have also received many donations from the community.
They currently need protein items like peanut butter, fruit and soup.
The Florence Salvation Army has a food pantry available for helping residents in the Pee Dee with feeding their families after the storm.
The charitable organization focuses on helping those in the community.
Major Chris Thornhill, the Commanding Officer for the Florence Salvation Army explained, “We just love people, you know, we love each other. We just want to make sure everybody is okay. For me that is one of the most fulfilling things about being in Florence but being a Salvation Army Officer. I get the freedom to see… or the opportunity to see the impact that our efforts make in one person’s life if not a family or multiple families.”
Major Thornhill said the Pee Dee community has come together to help each other.
The Salvation Army is responsible for feeding the shelter in Mullins.
List of Food Pantries in Florence:
Lighthouse Ministries food donation service is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon- 3pm.
Salvation Army food pantry is available on Tuesdays and Thurs 1pm- 1:20pm.
Manna House food pantry is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:00am- 11:00am.
The Sherman Center Food Pantry is available Wednesday at 8:30am
