Francis Marion University was struck with graffiti vandalism across several portions of the campus Monday morning.

According to the university, someone spray-painted “1:12” on buildings, sidewalks, and other locations near Smith Student Center and Rogers Library.

Director of Public Affairs Tucker Mitchell said nearly 30 areas were hit by the vandals.

Around 4:30 pm Monday, Mitchell released a statement that said the graffiti was linked to Greek letters associated with a fraternity on campus.

“…the vandalism incident on the FMU campus reported earlier today was a prank perpetrated by a small group of fraternity pledges. The numerals ‘1:12’ were meant to symbolize the first and 12th letters of the Greek alphabet, Alpha Mu, the pledge class’s designation,” Mitchell said in a press release.

State and university action against the students allegedly involved is pending, Mitchell added.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called in to assist with the investigation.

FMU is working to get the damaged areas cleaned up as soon as possible.
