Saturday afternoon family members, friends and colleagues paid their final respects to an officer who served nearly 40 years with the florence city police department.
Lieutenant Samuel Toney’s funeral was at Mount Zion AME. church in Florence on Saturday.
Lieutenant Toney was serving as a Squad Commander in the uniformed patrol division at the time of his death.
Colleagues say he had a passion for the youth in the community and was well respected in and outside of the city of Florence.
“Officer Toney was an exemplary policeman, a great man, and a dear friend and he will be sorely missed,” said Mayor Stephen Wukela
“Sam and I were co-workers and friends and his untimely passing leaves a tremendous void within the city of Florence as a whole….
We ask everyone to please remember Lieutenant Toney’s family in prayer as they work through this most difficult period of time,” said Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler.
