FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – On Tuesday, both Florence School District One and the City of Florence announced a new public roadway will be built.

Officials at McLaurin Elementary School in Florence want to relieve traffic congestion.  Right now, it is one of the largest elementary schools in the district.

They say crews will build a thorough-fare to connect with the 301 bypass at Freedom Boulevard.

“The volume of traffic we can handle.  I think it snarls the traffic out on turner road and some other places.  but the safety issue, being that it’s at the end of a dead end street and only one way in and one way out in case of an emergency is just not something that is safe,” said Deborah Cribb, Principal at McLaurin Elementary.

The city says work to build the roadway will start immediately.
