Florence man found guilty of murder, gets life without parole

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – A jury on Thursday has found a Florence man guilty of murder, according to Solicitor Ed Clements.

Michael Joe Smith’s trial started on Monday. Smith was arrested in February 2017 in connection to a deadly shooting along Francis Marion Road.

Smith was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

Malcolm “Kenny” Kemmerlin, 55, died in the shooting. Two other people also were charged in the case.

Rasheem Kevin Thomas was charged with murder and accessory before the fact of a felony. Investigators say Thomas was with Smith when the victim was killed, and that Thomas provided Smith with the gun used in the murder.

Debra Turner Smith was charged with one count of accessory after the fact of a felony. According to investigators, Debra Smith is alleged to have driven Michael Joe Smith away from Florence County, thereby aiding him in an attempt to evade law enforcement.
