FLORENCE, SC – Florence-Darlington Technical College’s Continuing Education Division is hosting a five week Computer Build for at risk high school students through Thursday, June 30, 2015 at the College’s Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT). The students will learn how to build and operate a computer. The students will then get to take their new computer home.
The students are part of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Summer Youth Program and school districts in Florence and Darlington are also co-sponsoring the course. FDTC’s Continuing Education Division is hosting a computer build for the students that will teach each student how to build a computer from the ground up. The students will then get to take their new computer home.
The students will also take a certification exam that will give them a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) designation. According to FDTC Computer Technology Instructor Mat Lemke, the certification, will give the students “a great bullet point on their resume.” Lemke continued, “Anyone can say they know how to operate a computer, but the certification will give them an edge.” He’s also teaching the course.
The students will also be treated to visits from other professional at the SiMT to talk with about careers in Information Technology and College Admissions officials will be on hand to speak with them about furthering their academics. The classes begin at 9 a.m. each morning and run until 4 p.m.
