FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – People in the Pee Dee can expect strong winds and possible flash floods as Hurricane Hermine moves through South Carolina.

News13 asked how Florence County officials will prepare for the storm.

Flash flooding is the biggest concern for Florence County officials. Florence County Emergency Management said they are prepared for any path Hurricane Hermine takes.

This time tomorrow expect heavy rain and high winds.

Around the clock preparations are under way across Florence County.

Lake City Fire Chief, Randy Driggers said the Fire Department is ready to block off areas prone to flooding, like this intersection at Thomas Street and RonMcNair Boulevard if it becomes dangerous for drivers.

Chief Driggers said, “Everyone is normally concerned for flooding issues but we’ve taken every precaution to make sure that if it does occur that we barricade any areas and that all civilians are safe at all times.

“We just check to make sure everything is good to go and ready and we’re above and beyond prepared. We just try to be prepared for the worst case scenarios at all times,” Chief Driggers adds.

Florence County Emergency Management is closely watching the forecast. Emergency Management Public Information Officer, Andrew Golden asks residents to avoid driving at night.

“Do what you can to keep yourself safe. Stay inside. Watch a movie that night. Do what you can to take care of yourself and your family” explained Golden.

Golden said people in low lying areas should watch for flash floods, “Everyone is afraid of that word flooding, especially after what happened last year…”

People in the City of Florence, as well as, Darlington and Johnsonville should also be on the lookout for flash floods.
