Florence city leaders work on plan to help develop ‘The Grove’

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence City Council has agreed to work with a developer to cultivate a chunk of land in West Florence that will eventually be made into a mix of residential and commercial properties.

They are calling it, “The Grove at Ebenezer.”

As of now, the greenery across from Sneed Middle School in Florence doesn’t necessarily catch the eye of travelers along Ebenezer Rd.

“This is different though than our normal planned development deals because of its sheer size,” said Mayor Stephen Wukela.

However, it caught the eye of a developer who wants to grow the 240-acre lot into single family homes and have commercial investment down the line.

Monday, council passed an agreement yesterday with the developer to lay out expectations for the project.

“It will develop in phases over a significant period of time.  It’s being planned in a way that it will be an amenity for those neighborhoods as opposed to be a detractor,” explained Wukela.

Wukela says phase one is expected to start soon and work will begin on single family housing.

Also the plan looks to eventually expand the city’s nearby rail-trail, which would connect to the new $7 million soccer complex near I-95.

“This is a much more planned specific development,” Wukela mentioned.

He says the plan will also address concerns, such as traffic.
