Florence Christian School held its annual Children with Hair Loss Chapel Monday, May 4 in the school gym. The school donated over 333 inches of hair to the national organization. The elementary and high school students and parents watched as 17 young ladies and a mother had a minimum of 8” of hair cut. Prior to the cutting, a video was shown that presented a life story of a young teen who is a benefactor of the hair given to the Children with Hair Loss organization. The national organization is non-profit and does not charge their recipients for the customized human hair replacement and care kit each recipient receives. Other FCS participants were recognized who had recently cut their hair and gave it to be included in the school’s donation. Local stylists also contributed to the cause by including hair donations from their salons. Twelve local stylists, led by Barbie Lee from The Salon, donated their time to make the service project possible. They not only prepared the hair for the cutting but then cut and styled each participants new look.
This special event was sponsored by the FCS student government. According to student government advisor and event organizer, Michelle Johnson, the school in the five years it has held this event has had 103 participants who have donated over 1300 inches of hair. Johnson continued, “It is amazing to see children, teens, and parents getting excited about helping others. This service project is very close to our hearts; we hope that it will continue to grow in the future.”
