FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Some Florence District One schools collected a lot of food to help children in need.   They also did research on how childhood hunger can affect learning.
Wednesday, they presented that research and all the food they collected to the Harvest Hope Food bank. 
Williams Middle School donated more than 2,900 pounds of food. Southside Middle also contributed to the research and donations.
In all more than 5,000 pounds of food went to the food bank.  
“Our school kept bringing in lots of cans and everyday, my first period teacher is the teacher who you would bring cans to, and everyday we just had numerous amounts of kids coming in bringing in lots of cans and that was a good thing to see, ”  commented Jacelyn Honney, a Southside Middle School student.

Students at Southside Middle and Williams Middle have done research on the relationship between childhood hunger and learning. The students have worked in cooperation with Francis Marion University’s (FMU) College and Career Readiness Program and the Florence Career Center in completing a global citizenship project.

The results of the students’ research will be presented to the members of the Board of Directors of SNAC (Shelter and Nutrition for All Children) and FMU staff members on Wednesday, March 28th at the Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2513 West Lucas Street from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon. The students will unveil a SNAC program community brochure and canned food drive donation to the Harvest Hope Food Bank, in addition to providing their research on homelessness and hunger among school-aged children.
