FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Members of the First Baptist Church of Florence celebrated its 150th anniversary Sunday.

The church was built in 1866 and back then, a building committee gave a contract for $5,000 for a church building.

Church leaders say 36 people organized the church and became its charter members.

At that time, the building had no heat or lights so members would bring candles and fix them on crosspieces between the pews in the church.

Those who have been members for over 60 years say they’re excited to be a part of the celebration.

“Well people have come and gone that’s for sure and pastors have come and gone, but God has remained faithful right here through it all. That’s right, she said it all,” said Pattie Ousley.

More than 100 people were in attendance Sunday including past church leaders who came back to visit and help lead services.
