It’s been almost 9 years since the mattress store fire that claimed the lives of 9 Charleston firefighters.

Firefighter Matthew Schneider remembers June 18 as well as any firefighter in the Lowcountry.

“While I was responding, I got a call that Mikey French was missing,” said Schneider, who was off duty that day, “you know maybe he turned off his radio.”

French was one of the nine lost that day. The sofa super store site has since been turned into a memorial site. Schneider and the motorcycle club he’s a part of are trying to improve the memorial site.

Fire and Iron Motorcycle Club is selling Memorial personalized Bricks to cover the walkways of what former mayor Riley has called sacred ground.

They estimate they need 10,000 bricks to cover the walkways at the site and hope to sell that many as well.

The club is selling two variations of the customized bricks. The first style with three lines and 18 characters each is $100. The second with more characters is $150.

“All the money goes to improvements for the site,” said Fire and Iron club president Corey Hanson, “anybody in the world can buy a brick here, we’d like to not have to put a blank brick down.”
