LITCHFIELD, SC (WBTW) – Georgetown County officials say a fire was reported at Marsh Villas at Litchfield by the Sea Saturday afternoon.
County spokesperson Jackie Broach says Midway Fire was having difficulty reaching the area due to the flooding on the roadways. According to Broach, a special military vehicle from the National Guard arrived about 10 minutes later to help transport first responders to the scene.
Midway Fire Rescue Chief Doug Eggiman said water on the road was five feet deep in one area but despite the delay, damage was limited to two buildings and four units. One Midway Fire truck was damaged by the floodwaters as it tried to reach the fire, officials say.
Eggiman says firefighters worked at the scene for about 90 minutes and no one was injured in the fire.
“Thank goodness we had the National Guard here,” Eggiman said. “They were really invaluable in responding to this incident.”
An investigation into the cause of the fire probably won’t start until Monday at the earliest.
