MARION, S.C. (WBTW) – Parts of Marion County like Nichols flooded during Hurricane Matthew. A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Mobile Disaster Relief unit was in the parking lot of the County Administration building Friday.
FEMA employees are taking claims as the first part of the process. After a claim is filed, they will send a crew to assess the damage. Residents in the area said they just want a little help because the damage will cost thousands of dollars to repair.
“I hope I can get some help. I’m 80 years old. I’m not able to fix all of the physical damage. I’m hoping that they will they will come in and help with the cleanup,” Robert Small said.
The relief center in Marion served more than 200 people since it arrived on Wednesday. FEMA Specialists explain the process only takes 15 minutes in person.
“We’re really happy to be here, it’s really nice to interact with the survivors one-on-one. We understand that this is there time of need and one of their worst days. So, it really is special to be here and to help them navigate through this very difficult time,” David Gudias, FEMA Disaster Survivor Specialist, said.
