QUAD CITIES, Iowa – Good news for pet owners, as the FDA approved a new drug that will calm dogs who are anxious during storms or fireworks.
Local Veterinarians say they use drugs similar to this already to help dogs with anxiety.
Sileo is an oral gel for animals. Dr. Laura Bahns says the medication is placed on the animal’s gums and will help them mellow out.
Bahns said this medication is coming out at the right time with summer bringing on the sound of thunder and fireworks.
She says many pet owners in the QCA have been making trips to the vet to prepare for the noisy Fourth of July weekend.
“First thing is don’t take your pet to those places especially because that can just enhance their phobia,” said Bahns.
She also recommends pet owners try out the “thunder shirt” which is worn by animals to give them a sense of security.
“Sometimes we start with thunder shirt first and if that’s not enough we move up to the prescription medications,” said Bahns.
If your in your home and the fireworks are upsetting your animal, Bahns recommends shutting the blinds and turning on the TV to drown out the loud noise.
She also recommends you take your dog to a doctor right away if they are showing signs of anxiety.
