CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are responding to a fatal crash on Highway 701 just south on Conway, according to the patrol’s CAD website.

According to Trooper Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a pickup truck traveling south on 701 ran off the road, into a ditch then into a culvert before striking a pole and ending up on its side.

Tidwell says the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the truck.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler identified the victim as 34-year-old Christopher Gude of Conway. Gude died at the scene of the crash.

Horry County Fire Rescue is also responding to the crash. According to a post on Facebook from the department, the crash happened at around 6:30 on Friday evening. The road was shut down temporarily and one lane will remain closed as crews clean up the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.
