LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken says Eddie Salters, 84, and his wife, Yvonda Salters, 64, were found dead inside a home on Darlington Street in Lake City Saturday morning.

Officials say the fire started around 12:45 a.m. and more than 50 percent of the home was covered in flames when firefighters arrived on scene.

Twenty-four year-old Jawan Dubose stood across the street from his grandmother’s house Sunday afternoon with a heavy heart.

“That’s where I was raised, from my great-grandma, to my grandma, to my mother, cousins, everybody,” said Dubose.

The blaze ripped through the home of many generations Saturday morning.

Dubose says he was at work at the time and his phone was dead. He says his grandparents’ death didn’t really hit him until he drove by their home.

“My family, they didn’t even want to tell me at first. I didn’t believe it until I seen this,” said Dubose.

Dubose says his grandmother recently had a heart attack and had took her first couple of steps last week.

Distraught friends and neighbors in the deep river community paid tribute to the couple by standing together shoulder to shoulder Sunday afternoon.

“I would do all of their run arounds for them like going to the grocery store, picking up their medicine, and doing stuff for them. They really going go be missed in this community,” said neighbor and caretaker of the elderly couple Larry Miller.
