SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WBTW) – Brunswick County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man they say swapped places with his brother to escape jail last week at his home early Tuesday morning.
According to a press release, deputies arrested 22-year-old William Hewett and several others at his home on Trails End Drive. Deputies say last Thursday, Hewett switched arm bands with his incarcerated brother, Curtis, at the county jail, and was able to escape. Curtis Hewett is also charged with escape, and remains in jail.
William Hewett was arrested last week on charges including communicating threats, assault with a deadly weapon, and failure to appear in court.
Last week, the sheriff’s office fired Corporal Ashley Harrell, who was on duty when the brothers managed to fool guards as part of the escape.
