SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (AP) – An environmental group is challenging a state permit allowing a developer to build 21 houses on oceanfront property at Sunset Beach, along with a bridge.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports (http://bit.ly/2a5IF3e) the Southern Environmental Law Center filed the challenge last week.
Law center attorney Geoff Gisler says the Coastal Area Management Act permit filed by developer Sunset Beach West LLC was approved June 20.
Gisler says the law center is raising several issues, including that the developers did not provide proof they own the land. A 1987 deed indicates Sunset Beach owns the land.
Sunset Beach is pursuing claims to the property in a separate state court filing.
Developer Sammy Varnam says the challenge is ridiculous because opponents had plenty of time to speak up during the public comment period.
