CHARLESTON, SC (WBTW) The historic black church Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal has started its first worship service since nine of its members, including its pastor, were gunned down during a Bible study.
The church was filled for the service Sunday morning. Uniformed police officers are posted on both levels of the sanctuary. Members of the church were let in through a side door earlier presumably so they could have Sunday school. The main service will started at 9:30 a.m.
The service began with prayer and songs.
Senator Dick Elliott who served with one of the victims, Senator Clementa Pickney issued this statement on the shooting.
