With the primary election under two weeks away, local Republicans gave voters the opportunity to meet and greet GOP candidates.

The Myrtle Beach Republican Women hosted the biennial Elephant Stampede on Saturday. Voters gathered at the Peanut Warehouse on Laurel Street in Conway to hear from more than a dozen local and state political candidates.

The event also included a straw poll, which organizers said is typically indicative of the outcome of the primaries. The Elephant Stampede is a historic GOP tradition that’s occurred for almost 30 years.

“We’re encouraging people to understand what the issues are in our community as well as in our state, and nationally. And the importance of not being apathetic and being involved. Because, truly, votes are what makes it happen,” said Johnnie Bellamy, president of the Myrtle Beach Republican Women.

The primary election is on June 12th.
