MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Talkin’ Trash program in Horry County is now underway for the 2018-2019 school year. Victoria Johnson and Kendra Hooks from the Horry County Solid Waste Authority joined News13 NOW at 9 a.m. on Wednesday to talk about the program.

Johnson and Hooks gave this summary: “Talkin Trash is a contest between Elementary schools between October – March. Schools participate in fun challenges to help them win extra points. There are 3 winners each month and they win prizes as well as the chance to go on grand finale field trip.”

The goal of the program is to teach students about recycling and the importance of not throwing everything away because trash goes to the county’s only landfill. Once the landfill is full, the county will likely have to pay to ship the county’s trash elsewhere, which will cost the county more money.
