Columbia, SC (WBTW) — While Duke freshman sensation Zion Williamson was not born in South Carolina the state molded him into the player that today appears to be a no-brainer for the number one pick in the NBA draft in June.
Zion moved to the Pee Dee when he was two years old and attended Johnakin Middle School in Marion before heading to the upstate to lead Spartanburg to back-to-back state championship in the SCISA ranks. After a lengthy recruiting process Zion picked the Blue Devils over offers from UNC, Clemson, USC and others. The NCAA first round matchup against NDSU will serve as his first game back in the Palmetto State since defeating Florence’s Trinity Byrnes in the SCISA championship in 2018.
“It really means a lot because the last game I played in South Carolina was at the Sumter Civic Center for my high school state championship and for this to be my first game, March Madness like I mean it’s a blessing,” Williamson said.
If Duke can beat (16) NDSU they will play Oklahoma on the final day of the Columbia regional on Sunday.
