GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina Highway Patrol is reporting a four car accident caused by a driver under the influence Tuesday.

SCHP traffic information reports that officers were called to the bridge off of Highway 17 between Georgetown and Pawleys Island at 2:31 p.m.

Cpl. Sonny Collins with SCHP said that four cars were involved in the accident. Collins said the crash happened when the driver of a Camry hit the vehicle in front of him going north on Highway 17.

The driver struck the vehicle beside him, a white pickup truck, and it went across the median and overturned. Then, an opposite, southbound SUV hit that pickup.

The driver of the Camry was at fault for the accident and was identified by SCHP as 67-year-old Frank Cunnane of Pawleys Island. Cunnane was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

The Georgetown County Facebook page says that all lanes of Highway 17 were closed for a period this afternoon, but at 3:19 p.m., one northbound lane was open, but traffic was moving slowly.

Jackie Broach, Georgetown County spokesperson, said Midway Fire confirms that traffic on Highway 17 southbound was backed up to the south causeway. Because of the congestion, tow trucks had difficulty getting to the scene to clear the wreckage.

Collins says only minor injuries were reported and the victims were being checked out by EMS.
