LITCHFIELD BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Georgetown County neighbors can now use a second drug drop-off box to safely get rid of expired or unused prescription drugs.
Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office received the drop-off box through a program from CVS and The Partnership at Drugfree.org to allow community members to safely dispose of unwanted medications, including controlled substances.
Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse, according to the sheriff’s office. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
Bring your pills or patches for disposal to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office Litchfield Substation located at 14363 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island. Items which are not accepted include liquids, needles (sharps), thermometers and inhalers.
