Drone video shows path of destruction in eastern Alabama

BEAUREGARD, Ala. — Drone video shows the path of destruction in eastern Alabama from a tornado that killed at least 23 people in Lee County Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service gave the storm a preliminary rating of EF-4.

Traveling at least part of the way down a country road, a twister carved a trail of destruction at least half a mile wide and about a mile long.  Footage captured by WIAT-TV in Birmingham shows homes destroyed and dozens of downed trees.

Volunteers and rescuers were out Monday searching through debris looking for additional victims.

Even if the death toll does not rise, this will be the highest single-day death toll from tornadoes in the U.S. since May 2013, when an EF-5 twister killed 24 people in Moore, Oklahoma.
