MYRTLE BEACH, SC-     Mustang Week began Tuesday on the Grand Strand. The rally features thousands of Ford Mustangs.

“It’s like the holy grail for everybody that owns a Mustang,” stated Dan Rogers.

Rogers called his 2010 GT Shelby 500 an eye catcher. He said bright blue exterior gets people’s attention.

“I always like when I get a thumbs up or somebody says you got a beautiful car,” said Rogers.

Mustang Week attendance increases 10-25% each year, according to organizer Brad Worley.

“Mustangs are as American as baseball and apple pie,” said Worley.

Mustang Week has caused controversy in recent years because of viral videos that show Mustangs speeding and doing burnouts in front of the Myrtle Beach Mall.

“That’s what a lot of people feel like they want to see but we do not condone anything that is done on a city street that puts anybody in danger,”stated Worley.

Rogers told News 13 he prefers burnouts on the track, not the road. He partially blames the people that line up to watch.

“If you don’t give somebody and audience, they won’t act a fool,” explained Rogers.

Horry County Police and South Carolina Highway Patrol will have extra officers patrolling the roads this week. Organizers expect Friday and Saturday to be the busiest, in front of the Myrtle Beach Mall. HCPD Lt. Raul Denis said officers will restrict traffic to the mall’s parking lot if necessary. Denis said they will not tolerate reckless driving.
