PEMBROKE, NC (WBTW) – A woman is dead after a driver fled a law enforcement checkpoint and crashed Saturday in Robeson County.

Sgt Philip Collins with the NC Highway Patrol says speed and alcohol were both factors in the single car crash. The collision reportedly happened at 12:29 a.m. on Moss Neck Road, near Pembroke.

According to Sgt. Collins, a car with three people inside sped through a standard license checkpoint set up at the intersection of Moss Neck Road and Union Chapel Road. A trooper made it inside his car and turned on his lights to attempt to pull over the vehicle, but the collision happened before the state trooper caught up to the suspect’s car.

The driver, 21-year-old Cody Strickland of Pembroke, was traveling over 80 mph when he ran off the road, over corrected, hit a ditch and overturned. The person in the front passenger seat was thrown from the car.

The passenger, identified as 25-year-old Etiska Shea Locklear of Shannon, NC, died at the hospital.

Strickland, who was driving, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries before he was arrested and charged with DWI and second degree murder.  A third passenger sitting in the back seat walked away without any injuries, troopers say.
