Driver dies after crash during race at SC dragway

LAURENS CO., SC – The Laurens County coroner says one man was killed after a crash during a race at Ware Shoals Dragway.

Anthony Craig Owen, 38, was killed during the race, according to the coroner.

A video posted to Facebook then removed appeared to show a car flipping off of the track towards the crowd.

Laurens County deputies say one man watching the race was injured and a child was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Races continued after Owen crashed his car and flipped just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

Race organizers say Owen was a well known and loved racer.

Better Built Customs rented out Ware Shoals Dragway and the company says it is donating the winning money pot – $6,000 – to Owen’s family and are planning a memorial race in the near future.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the spectator hit and injured during the crash.
