LUMBERTON, N.C.  – Two Stay Alert Safety Security workers were struck, and one was killed, early Thursday morning when a driver hit them on I-95 northbound.

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. on I-95 northbound at the 16-mile marker, Lumberton Police said. Officers arrived on scene and found two Stay Alert Safety Services workers had been struck by a vehicle.

Sergio Escobar, 31, of Middlesex and Michael Paris, 27, of Zebulon were preparing to open up the interstate to traffic early Thursday morning. Paris had just exited his work vehicle, a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck, when a 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by 53-year-old Pamela Gail Johnstone of Swickley, Pennsylvania, slammed into him.

Johnstone’s Jeep then smashed into Escobar, killing him on the scene. Johnstone continued driving north before veering off the road and crashing through a wire fence.

Paris was transported to UNC Hospitals.

Johnstone was not injured in the crash. Johnstone was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to maintain a lane, failure to reduce speed and failure to yield the right of way at a construction site causing bodily injury.

Johnstone was traveling between 70 and 75 miles per hour at the time. She is at the Robeson County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond.
