Champion Autism Network held a sensory-friendly Easter egg hunt for children with autism and other special needs on Saturday morning.
Children of all ages hunted for eggs at Passive Park in Surfside Beach. The Town of Surfside Beach sponsored the event, providing the eggs and gift baskets.
This is the second year CAN has held a sensory-friendly Easter egg hunt. Surfside Beach holds its annual egg hunt in the afternoon, but CAN felt it was important to create a separate experience for families of children with autism.
“Hundreds of people attend and it’s just too overwhelming, so it really means a lot to the parents that their child can come and not be overstimulated, overwhelmed or even run over. And they can be in a safer, quieter environment,” said CAN Executive Director Becky Large.
Champion Autism Network will also hold a sensory-friendly play day at Dave and Busters on Wednesday from 8 to 11 AM. If you’re interested, you must register in advance at CAN’s website.
