Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium renovation will displace track events

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The proposed renovations to Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium slated to begin next January will temporarily displace several events in 2017.

The press release from Mark Kruea says events like the Coach ‘O’ Coastal Carolina Invitational track and field meet and the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational track and field meet will not occur at the venue until the new and improved stadium is opened in 2018.

The City of Myrtle Beach and Coastal Carolina University have partnered since 2008 to organize and host both collegiate track and field events and while construction is underway, practice opportunities nearby will exist for javelin, shot put, discus and hammer throws.  Track and field training opportunities also will exist at Coastal Carolina University.

The City of Myrtle Beach is talking with Coastal Carolina University about an on-campus meet for 2017, as an option, Kruea says.

The $5 million Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium project includes a new press box, new locker rooms, new restrooms, new grandstand seats, an additional 1,000 visitor seats, new artificial turf on the playing field,  and a new all-weather rubberized track and installation of home-side sprint lanes.

Work is expected to be completed in August 2017, in time for Myrtle Beach High School football games.

The City of Myrtle Beach and the Horry County Schools jointly own Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, which is named after a legendary Myrtle Beach football coach.

Coach Doug Shaw had 223 wins, 77 losses and two ties in his 25 years with the Myrtle Beach Seahawks.  His high school teams won four state championships before his sudden death at age 52 in 1994.
