New Orleans, LA. (WBTW) — Coastal Carolina’s DJ Williams has been voted the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Feb. 18-24, the league announced Monday. It is the third such honor this season for Williams, who previously earned the recognition on Nov. 27 and Feb. 11.
Williams averaged 25.5 points and 5.5 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field in a pair of Coastal wins at Georgia Southern and Georgia State last week.
The junior guard powered Coastal’s fourth-quarter comeback at Georgia Southern on Thursday, scoring 14 of her 25 points in the last four minutes of the final frame to erase what had been a 10-point deficit. She also assisted on the game-winning 3-pointer that gave the Chants their 76-73 victory.
At Georgia State on Saturday, Williams again led all players in scoring with 26 points. She got exactly half of those points on 14 attempts at the free-throw line, and made five straight free throws in the closing minutes to put the game out reach.
Williams’ 51 combined points this past week brings her career total to 995. She will have an opportunity to become the 16th member of Coastal’s 1000-point club in front of a home crowd this week as the Chanticleers host Louisiana and ULM at the HTC Center on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
