ANDREWS, SC (WBTW) – Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson confirms he is en route to Pea House Landing where divers have recovered the body of the missing 19-year-old fisherman.
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Natural Resources continued their search Friday morning for the young fisherman who fell into the Black River and never resurfaced.
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office assisted the SC Department of Natural Resources in the search at Pea House Landing off of Big Dam Swamp Road, according to Jason Lesley with Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
The search for a person who fell off a dock into the Black River Thursday evening has concluded. Divers discovered the body Friday morning, confirms the Georgetown County Coroner’s Office. Lesley says the victim is 19-year-old Michael Javon Conyers Jr.of Georgetown County.
It was first believed that Conyers fell from a boat, but the sheriff’s office clarifies that the fishers were actually on the dock.
Lesley explains three people were on the dock fishing, when Conyer’s line got tangled and the man fell into the water. The two other people at the dock with Conyers jumped into the water to rescue him, as they knew he could not swim. The two people lost their grasp on the victim and were unable to find him again in the water, Lesley confirms.
Officials with the sheriff’s office say the search began close to 7 p.m. Thursday and crews searched for as long as possible before suspending the search until Friday morning.
First Sgt. Ryan Williams with the Department of Natural Resources confirms dive crews were back in the Black River Friday morning searching for Conyers.
