DILLON, SC (WBTW) – Dillon County is now in search of a new administrator after the previous one resigned his post.

He had been the Dillon County administrator since 2010, but that all changed during Friday’s special called council meeting when Clay Young told council he was resigning.

During an executive session, council agreed to accept an agreement to buy out the contract of the now former county administrator. Young was voted into the position most recently in late 2010 and took over in 2011. He had previously been the county administrator until he resigned in 2009 to take a position in North Carolina.

The council agreed to pay Young just under $27,000. That amount would cover the remainder of his contracted salary and leave time. It is unclear at this time whether Young has another job lined up or whether he wants to take retirement from the state of South Carolina.

During the Friday meeting, council nominated former Marion mayor Rodney Berry for the job of interim administrator. Berry said Monday he had accepted the position and will start as interim administrator in two weeks.

Berry was the mayor of Marion from 2009 to 2013 when he was defeated in a reelection campaign. He has since been working as an economic development adviser in SC 7th District Congressman Tom Rice’s Pee Dee office in Florence.

Mr. Berry is a Dillon native and said Monday that he looks forward to getting started with the county. He hopes to help his home county take advantage of exciting economic developments–like the recent announcement of an inland port–and become even more successful.

“The proposed inland port is one of the most exciting economic developments to happen to Dillon county in a long time,” Berry said.

Council members said the search is on for a permanent county administrator but that the position likely won’t be filled until early next year.
