DILLON, SC (WBTW) – April is the month for autism awareness and some people in the Pee Dee who experience it first-hand say now is the perfect time to educate and promote acceptance for an often misunderstood disorder.
Parents and residents from across Dillon, Marion and Florence raised awareness for autism Saturday afternoon at the Dillon Church of God Youth and Activity Center today.
Kids who attended got a chance to enjoy a train ride, games, face painting and hot dogs.
Organizers of the event say although individuals with autism may need assistance to help them cope with everyday situations they should not be treated any differently.
The celebration is a way to teach others in smaller communities about the behavioral issues that come with autism and to encourage non-judgement.
“It started out as a very small message on Facebook that grew because parents… this is their passion. I teach Special Education and this is also my passion and it’s just amazing. I’ve already cried today because it’s just amazing at the outpouring of love people bring” said Pam Daniels, event organizer and special education instructor at Dillon Church of God.
The Dillon Church of God is expected to start up a special needs summer camp in June for kids throughout the community.
