CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Members of the Board of Health and Environmental Control this week take another look at the conditional approval given by the DHEC staff for seismic testing for oil and natural gas off the South Carolina coast.
The matter is on the Thursday agenda of the board’s Request for Final Review Committee which meets in Columbia.
Coastal communities and environmental groups asked for the review after the DHEC staff last month found that a testing proposal by Spectrum GEO is consistent with state environmental laws. The company wants permission from the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to survey offshore.
Three communities, two environmental groups and a seafood company say the staff did not consider the opinions of those opposed to testing.
