MYRTLE BEACH, SC- City leaders approved construction of a 22-story hotel on 17th Avenue North. Original plans for the project included an elevated crosswalk over Ocean Boulevard. However, public opposition led the developer to drop that part of the proposal.
Several changes were made to the plan before council agreed to let it move forward. The water park that was once on the opposite side of the road, is now located in the ocean front tower. In addition, alley ways were redesigned to maintain the public’s green space.
The project is estimated to cost $42 million. Myrtle Beach Spokesman Mark Kruea said the proposal includes extending the boardwalk from 15th Avenue North to 18th Avenue North. He also stated that the developer has allocated $300,000 for the city to build affordable housing in the area.
Construction of the hotel is expected to last two years. According to Kruea, Phase III of the project includes two additional 19-story condominium towers.
