Deteriorating nails blamed for North Carolina deck collapse

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say the nails holding the floor of a deck gave way, causing a family posing for a picture to fall about 10 feet at a North Carolina beachfront rental home.

Emerald Isle Town Manager Frank Rush said at a news release Sunday that the deck was likely built to code when the house was constructed in 1986, but the nails had deteriorated in the harsh conditions along the ocean.

Rush says 24 people were injured in the Saturday night collapse, and five of them remain in the hospital. He says the ages of those injured ranged from 5 to 94.

The town manager says the family at the rental home was from northern Virginia.

Rush says the rental company is cooperating with authorities, and the results of an investigation into the collapse will be made public.
