MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)- The Design/Build Selection Committee for the Performing Arts and Amphitheater Facility met for the first time Wednesday to get the ball rolling on the project.

The City of Myrtle Beach wants to construct a Performing Arts Center on the Convention Center property located north of 21st N and lying between Oak Street and Robert Grissom Parkway.

The proposed site is just north of the recently constructed Myrtle Beach Sports Center. Burroughs & Chapin Boulevard will be extended from its terminus just west of Oak Street to Robert Grissom Parkway on the north side of the Convention Center property.

At Wednesday’s meeting, committee members received proposals from 8 architects or builders with their specific qualifications and prior relevant work.

The committee will now review each entry and narrow them down to three based on an evaluation sheet. One of the biggest factors will be cost.

“We will tell them this is a maximum budget of 10 million dollars. So if they come back with a plan that’s going to cost 15 million, we’re not going to look at it. so they have to give us a plan that we can afford, that’s what this is about,” Chairman Ron Andrews said.

The committee will meet again during the first week of July. The companies selected to move forward in the process will then submit design plans and what their vision for the Performing Arts Center will be.
