Deputy who tossed SC high school student won’t be charged

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina solicitor says a sheriff’s deputy will face no charges for tossing a student across a classroom after she refused to put away her cellphone.

Solicitor Dan Johnson announced Friday that he found no probable cause to charge Ben Fields. Fields was fired from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in October after students at Spring Valley High School recorded him flipping a girl to the floor and dragging her across a classroom.

Authorities charged that girl as well as another who recorded Fields while denouncing his actions.

Johnson says the charges of disturbing schools that both girls faced will also be dropped.
