MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) Berkeley County officials confirm that a Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputy has been shot, WCBD reports.

The incident happened at a gas station near Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner. The shooting happened in the Moncks Corner Police Department jurisdiction.

The suspect is driving a Black Santa Fe SUV with tag number 542-85W. The vehicle was found shortly after a BOLO on the vehicle was released, but the location of the vehicle was not immediately available.

The Exxon station where the shooting happened has been roped off and dozens of cruisers of several departments are on the scene. Berkeley County Chief Deputy Rick Ollic is also on the scene.

State Law Enforcement Division, or SLED, are working closely with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. Thom Berry, a spokesperson for SLED, says they’ve sent crime scene technicians and agents to assist with the investigation.

Traffic was blocked off in the area as police searched for a suspect. Police were stopping cars and checking everyone’s cars and trunks.

The wounded deputy was flown by helicopter to the Medical University of South Carolina. Cruisers with Charleston Police and Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office wait outside the hospital as well.

No word yet on the deputy’s condition.
