NICHOLS, SC (WBTW) – The deputy involved in a shooting in Nichols on Monday morning where a man died has been identified.
In a press release, Brooke Holden, with the Horry County Sheriff’s Office, identified the deputy involved as Deputy First Class Jack Lee. He was assisting the Horry County Police Department as a member of its SWAT team, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputy Lee has been placed on paid administrative leave pending investigations.
Holden also released a timeline of Deputy Lee’s service on Thursday.
Deputy Lee began his law enforcement career at the Horry County Police Department in 1987, according to Holden. He started with the HCSO in 2012. Lee was assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force in 2012.
Lee is also a retired U.S. Naval Reserve officer of 31 years, Holden said.
A 30-year-old Nichols man died after the deputy-involved shooting.
Horry County Coroner Robert Edge confirms Brandon Coty Elliott, the suspect in a Nichols shooting, died at McLeod Hospital in Loris. Elliott lived in the Creek Landing Road area.
Horry County police responded to a report of shots fired at about 6 a.m. on Monday. The incident happened in the area of Creek Landing Road.
The call was for an armed individual who was believed to have taken shots at several items of personal property and threatened others.
After arriving, officers located the armed suspect in the woods. As a result of the incident, there was an officer-involved shooting, according to Mikayla Moskov, public information officer for HCPD.
Records in show Elliot had been released from jail on Thursday after charges of trespassing, larceny, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.
Elliot’s has a long history of charges, according to the Horry County Public Index:
- 2014: charged with assault and battery, third degree.
- 2016: charged with reckless driving.
- 2017: charged with threat / threatening life, person or family of public employee.
- 2017: charged with resisting / resisting Arrest; oppose or resist law enforcement officer. serving process or making arrest.
- August 2018: charged with weapons / possession of firearm or ammunition by person convicted of violent felony.
- March 18, 2019: trespassing / entry on another’s pasture or other lands after notice.
- March 18, 2019: Breach / Breach of trust with fraudulent intent, value $2,000 or less.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has launched an investigation.
