WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WBTW) – Columbus County sheriff’s deputies chased a suspect who had stolen a patrol car across the state line into Horry County Sunday night.

It ended when he crashed the car, and Horry County Police took him into custody.

According to Major Bobby Worley with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Jernigan Street and Stake Road Sunday night because it matched the description of a vehicle possibly involved in some break-ins recently in Tabor City.

Investigators say the deputies determined that the passenger in the car, 42-year-old Nathan Tyler, had outstanding warrants against him, so they put him in handcuffs and Maj. Worley said they put him in the back of one of the deputy’s cars.

While the deputies were questioning the driver of the car they’d stopped, Maj. Worley said Tyler managed to get control of the patrol car and started driving away down Carolina Road, and eventually across the state line where he crashed in Horry County on Church Road.

Horry County Police took him into custody for driving a stolen vehicle, and he was booked at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, where he awaits extradition on charges from Columbus County including larceny of a stolen vehicle, speeding, reckless driving, and fleeing arrest.

The driver of the car originally stopped by deputies in Tabor City does not face charges at this time, Maj. Worley said.
