DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – When most people go to the ATM they swipe their card and go.

According to Darlington Police, Lt. Kimberly Nelson said “That’s how the one that we found, it just snaps on top of the ATM where you stick your card in. You don’t even notice and you go on and use it. And it’s skimming your information.”

Employees at the First Citizen bank in Darlington found a skimming device on the drive thru ATM.

“It was just attached the part where you insert your card,” says Lt. Nelson.

Although the Darlington Police believe the skimmer was only on the ATM for a couple of hours. This skimmer was a bit different.

“It was also a camera device attached to it for when you key in your pin,” Lt. Nelson explains.

Lt. Nelson is no stranger to fraudulent activity. “I’ve had mine used, was at a conference and I got a call from my bank saying my card was used in New Jersey and I was in Myrtle Beach.”

Darlington police say this is not the first time they have had an issue with skimmers. However over the last two years data suggests that skimmers have been on the rise. The software company FICO says,” A 546-percent in ATM skimming attacks from 2014 to 2015.

Lt. Nelson advises, “I would give is to keep close account on your account. Keep account of where you use your information or where you use your card.”

“It’s a scary feeling when you get that phone call. And especially if you already have bills lined up that’s due and you have things falling in line and all of a sudden you find out the money is not there,” Lt. Nelson says.

Darlington Police have not made any arrests. If you have any information on this call the Darlington Police at (843)-398-4026.
