HARTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) Late last year News13 told you about ownership of the historic Darlington Dragway changing hands.
Back in December, we caught up with the new owner, Russell Miller, who vowed to make some much needed renovations to improve safety there.
In only 100 days Miller and others have been hard at work to completely transform the historic dragstrip.
“I see accomplishment. What a group of people have done in just 100 days is unbelievable to me,” Miller stated.
We took a facility that had been in hard use and decay over the last 20 years and we turned it into something that Darlington County can be proud of. The state of South Carolina can be proud of,” he explained.
Since that time new concrete guard rails were added along with a newly repaved track.
“We’ve increased the integrity of the track; we got a brand new timing system in. We have brand new timing boards,” Miller said.
Wednesday night, was the opening night for the strip’s Traditional Grudge Test N Tune race, but the dragway’s first true test could have easily topped that.
In a video posted on the Darlington Dragway’s Facebook page, you can see Miller’s daughter Brooke at the starting line making the first pass in not just one but both lanes.
“Come one, what father wouldn’t be proud to have a daughter who wanted to do something like drag racing. I mean, that’s an unbelievable feeling,” Miller said grinning.
He says Wednesday night’s event saw a big turnout.
This Saturday it sets to host the IHRA Summit Points Race. Click here for a look at upcoming events at the dragway.
