Darlington courthouse escapee arrested in NC 2 months later

DARLINGTON, S.C. (WBTW) – Officials say that the man who escaped from the Darlington County Courthouse on May 16 has been arrested in North Carolina on unrelated charges.

23-year-old Shanard King was found in Jacksonville and the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office is making arrangements to return King back to South Carolina.

In May, Sheriff Wayne Byrd said King was at the courthouse for a hearing on his drug charges. He was not in custody before the hearing, but after King was sentenced to nine years in jail, he walked to the side of the courtroom on the 5th floor, and ran to the stairwell.

Witnesses told deputies they saw King run through an alley near the courthouse. Officers ran after the suspect, but could not catch him.

Due to the nature of the hearing, and the fact that King was not transported from a jail to receive a sentencing, there was only minimum security in the court room.
