DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – Officials say several schools in Darlington County are too old to be updated or wired to handle current technology.

A study done in 2012 recommended combining six aging elementary schools, two each in Darlingon, Hartsville, and Lamar, into three new schools.

“The average age of the elementary schools in Darlington County is 52.5 years, so I think that’s indicative of school facilities across the country, especially in rural areas,” said Dr. Eddie Ingram, Darlington County Superintendent.

The board wants to extend an existing penny tax to raise $6 million to build the schools.

That tax is set to end in 2018, but the school board passed the referendum proposal Friday to give voters the final say on the issue in November.
