DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say a man suspected in a strong of armed robberies in Darlington County has been shot and injured by sheriff’s deputies.

Sheriff Wayne Byrd tells local media outlets that 25-year-old Thomas Neal Lewis of Society Hill was shot at around 1:40 a.m. Sunday after fleeing from deputies.

Byrd says deputies were looking for a suspect in a string of armed robberies in Darlington County when they spotted Lewis. The sheriff says Lewis tried to hit a deputy with his truck before officers ordered him to stop and shot him when he didn’t comply.

Lewis was being treated at a hospital for his injuries. The officer involved in the shooting is on leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
